The EU has been the region leading on sustainable finance regulation and policies, creating some pressure on other countries to address the issue of sustainability in finance: disclosures, reporting, standardisation, and taxonomies. The ESG ratings space has been under a lot of criticism in recent years, mainly for the lack of correlation between the different ratings and the lack of clarity as to what they measure or what the methodologies are. However, it is key for businesses to understand what ESG ratings are for, what they measure and what they do not – and for investors to ensure they are not mislead. This panel will discuss the advantages of ESG ratings, the changes that we need to see in the use and creation of ESG ratings, and how they can be leveraged by businesses.
• Why is there so much criticism of ESG ratings, and is it justified?
• What are they key advantages of using ESG ratings?
• What would improve ESG ratings, their usability and usefulness?

In the run up to COP26 and afterwards, banks worldwide committed to net zero pledges. However, since then, questions have been raised about how net zero will be achieved in practice, and whether the transition to a carbon neutral Europe is feasible and what can be done by the end of this decade. Since banks are crucial actors in the European and especially CEE financial system that link the financial sector and the real economy, their strategies and practices will have a direct impact on the green transition.• Are banks able to tackle the challenges we face - is it their responsibility?
• What can banks do in practice to minimise new risks such as ones arising from climate change, biodiversity, and other sustainability-related factors?
• How can we support the implementation of the net zero pledges?
• What does leadership look like in the banking sector on climate-related issues or sustainability?
• What can regulators, policymakers and supervisors do that would be helpful for the banking sector?
• Is there a need and a market for new “sustainable” financial products?

The banking sector has to navigate a wide range of challenges and new demands, including ones related to sustainability data and reporting, changes in internal processes, and a wider rethink of their own business models for retaining profitability. While climate stress testing and climate-related physical and transition risk topics are now part of mainstream conversations about banking, approaches and readiness for climate-related risk management vary across different institutions and geographies.• How can banks improve their methodologies and scenarios?

CEE countries have been hit hard by the energy crisis. Questions about the best path forward for energy transition have proven to be divisive and difficult. This session will explore whether CEE countries face a promising, bright future when it comes to energy sector, and what is required to make this a reality – or, alternatively, is the CEE region on a path to a bleak future.• What energy source combination would be best suited to the CEE region’s needs, and which one is the most feasible?

An increasing number of important private and public sector actors agree on the need for an energy transition across Europe. However, much less attention is getting paid to the socio-economic impacts of the energy transition, and the risks of energy poverty across different regions. To avoid a political and societal backlash, it will be absolutely paramount to ensure that the transition is carried out in a way that is as socially and economically fair as possible.Moderator

To scale up renewable energy sources and usage, major investments and policy coordination is necessary. With the war in Ukraine, the urgency for an energy transition has become a lot more apparent, and so is the need for action. Yet European countries struggle to rapidly scale up renewable energy sources (RES) and to change policies and incentives that would enable more capital flowing to RES or clean energy companies.• What needs to change in the CEE region and wider Europe to expand RES?
• Which actors could and should do more?
• What are the different financing mechanisms and solutions for renewable energy projects and scaling up?
• What are the most successful examples of scaling up renewable energy in Europe?
• What is the role of the European Commission, and what can it do to help Member States transition?
• What role can the private sector and private finance play – and what are the necessary enablers to leverage their power?

Despite the EU’s focus on decarbonisation and sustainability, carbon emissions have not been falling. Maintaining the existing carbon intensive business models has been possible until now, but with more EU regulations and requirements for disclosures, it might become increasingly difficult to maintain the financing and investment necessary for businesses to continue their operations, especially in the CEE region.• What are the critical EU policies that could help or damage European business competitiveness?

It is a frequently lamented fact that the CEE capital markets are under-developed. At the same time, the number of Venture Capital (VC) and Private Equity (PE) funds has risen, and they have been crucial for funding start-ups and promising SMEs. Incubators, hackathons, support and mentoring schemes, and a variety of investor-led efforts try to empower entrepreneurs. Yet the figures remain somewhat disappointing, with a small number of European unicorns and sometimes sluggish growth. With climate change, decarbonisation, and social issues as defining problems of our era, this raises a question whether there is an opportunity for CEE innovators and entrepreneurs to create solutions.• Does the market rewards entrepreneurs or businesses with good environmental or social performance?
• What changes could help PE and VC funds to thrive?
• Does, and should, sustainability play a role in investment decisions?
